Wekfest 2011 Weekend…Part 2…

Back with part 2 of the much-anticipated Wekfest 2011 coverage…before I begin though, I think I should send a special shout-out and thank you to Rodrez and his fiancée Tes for driving May and I around throughout the weekend and picking up food for us when the car was loaded up with our merchandise. I didn’t want to be a burden on anyone and they were super cool about taking us everywhere…

Anyways, on with the coverage. After the Wek’Sos dinner, I went back to the room to try to get some sleep but I’ve just never been fond of sleeping in a bed that’s not my own. The best part of staying at the hotel we were at was that there was free breakfast every morning. Not only that, the breakfast was actually GOOD. I really wanted to sleep more because I was tossing and turning all night but May decided that sleep wasn’t important to me and she woke me up to go get breakfast…

They had these sausage breakfast sandwiches that were pretty good and I sat down and ate while I stared at my copy of Homeboys vs. Cholos. After that I got dressed and went down to the other guys’ rooms to see what was going on. DPK David was out draining the water out from inside his car at ATS Ray’s house while Rodrez and them were busy leaving this in front of my door…

I looked outside and people walking by were staring at me like I was crazy. At first I didn’t know who it was and thought it was David, who was staying across the hall from me, so I returned the favor by hanging bagels on his door. Of course, it wasn’t actually him as he wasn’t even at the hotel and his girl Jackie woke up with a bagel surprise on her doorknob…

We walked down the hall to the room where the rest of the 57 guys were staying and Jared was busy cutting Ryan’s hair. I don’t know if Jared had ever used clippers before or even known of their existence since he gets all his fancy haircuts in Hollywood where they use diamond-layered scissors but he made a good attempt at cleaning Ryan up. Another questionable thing about the whole haircut was that Ryan had a towel draped over his shoulder that had what looked to be chilli all over it, or some sort of cheese, or burrito sauce. I wonder what the cleaning lady was thinking when she picked up a towel off the floor with redish brown shit all over it and gobs of loose hair…

Shit was shot for a minute but then we set off to go to the store to pick-up some items that we needed for the rest of the weekend. Once we got out of the Burlingame area, it was off to the city to go grab lunch. The girls found this one place that they wanted to try out called “Cha Cha Cha” on Haight Street. David was still busy working on his car with the other guys at Ray’s so just the girls met up with us to eat…

Cha Cha Cha was this little hole-in-the-wall Tapas plates that serves up small plates of food. I try to calamari wherever I got and this place was pretty good. May ordered up some Sangria while we waited for her Seafood Paella to show up…

The decor of the place is pretty interesting if you like sitting inside places that make you feel like you’re sitting outside….They had makeshift plants everywhere and all the waiters there looked like they should be taking your order while sitting on a giant Spanish horse but yeah, uhhh, it was cool…

Seafood Paella was pretty good with the exception of the olives which I do not like to eat at all…

We cruised the city after that and hit up the usual spots that we like to visit when we’re up in SF…

We passed through the Castro Street area, which is an area that’s more devoted to the gay community and they had some interesting names for restaurants that reflected that…

There was some interesting sites on those streets. I’m a firm believer in being whoever you want to be and whether you’re gay or straight is cool with me but we saw the craziest thing when we drove through that area. Mind you, it was still raining pretty hard at the time so everyone was all dressed for cold weather. We saw this one dude however, who was wearing like pink underwear on the street, with a tanktop on, bright red Nikes, and a gold crown. It wasn’t even like, a fake Burger King crown, it was a full on gold crown, and this dude was rocking it on the street in the pouring rain…

Here is an artist’s depiction of what we saw…Craziest shit we had seen all weekend, I swear. Whatever floats your boat dude, rock on, haha…

We went back to the hotel after that to get some rest before dinner later that night. Big Mike had his whole giant food meet going on at Steelhead Brewery, which ended up with over 60 people showing up, but Rodrez, Tes, May, and I didn’t get a chance to stop by. We had to organize all the booth stuff and load it up into the car and dinner ran a bit late so it just wasn’t a good idea to go there. It would have been cool but we had to wake up around 5:30-6am to drive to Fort Mason for roll-in…

The rain was still coming down but by the evening, it eventually let up and stopped. Rain was a huge factor all weekend as the cars had to be cleaned for the show early Sunday. Luckily it stopped just in time for us to have a chance to clean up…

It was around 11:30 or so by the time we went to a local coin-op car wash. The girls volunteered to load up the Element with some of the lighter stuff while Rodrez and I cruised out in the CR-Z for a wash…

We called it a night after the wash and woke up early next morning to head out to Fort Mason. We were familiar with the location of Fort Mason because we actually stopped by after dinner to see exactly where it was at. There was no real traffic at that hour in the morning anyway so the drive was pretty simple…

The location itself was pretty amazing. Compared to a parking structure in J-town in year’s past, this location was a prime spot for the Wekfest event. I knew that it was going to be in two large buildings but I had no idea it was separated from the main street…

The scenery was absolutely breath-taking…

The Golden Gate Bridge could even be seen in the distance…I originally thought that this spot was closer to Fisherman’s Wharf but it was actually in a totally different area…

The craziest thing was that it was completely dry that day and the sun was actually out really early. Just shows how much pull the Wek’Sos guys have, haha, they can even change the weather. The previous days were filled with storms and heavy rain but on the Sunday of Wekfest, you couldn’t have ever thought that it rained at all the days before….

Waiting in line for vendor roll-in…

Check-in for the show, which we apparently didn’t have to do since we were vendors so we stood in line for nothing…

Honda Tuning CR-Z…

We stood in line for a bit while the staff inside was still preparing the area for us to come in. I just hung out and took random shots of whatever was around, including this Work Equip wheel…

HeyMikeyyyy showed-up and we talked for a minute before he had to go inside to help out the Wek’Sos staff…

Nice 3rd Generation GS that was parked by the water and was getting some photos taken by the owner…

Another clean one that was from the same crew or shop…

Phil from ATS showing up for Wekfest duties…

G35 sedan on some Nismo wheels rolling-up to the show…

It took some time but we finally made our way inside the venue. I drove the Element inside the building that we were in, unloaded all of our gear, and then drove it back to the little lot in front to park the car for the rest of the day. Then I grabbed my camera and continued to shoot whatever I saw until I got back inside the building to se-up the booth…

Absolutely loved this flared-out Toyota Starlet…

I think this drag car was from the Bay Area….I’m not 100% sure but I had a feeling…

I had the pleasure of writing Wek’Sos Ken’s gold EP3 Civic feature in Honda Tuning a couple years back. In fact, it was the first feature I had ever written for any publication. Ken thought the story was the worst thing on Earth so he quickly got rid of the car and bought this E60 BMW. Must.Be.Nice…

The calm before the storm…I figured I’d take a picture of the Wekfest decor before random ass kids attempted to steal the flags and then take them home and not do anything with them…Believe it or not, that’s what some people like to do. I even had a guy come up to my booth after the show and asked if I could give him my banners. What the fuck? Are banners cheap these days?…

I also wrote a story for Honda Tuning on this DA a couple years ago. This Integra is unique because it’s remained unchanged for almost a decade now. Still has old school Racing Hart C5 wheels, Wings West kit, and even an original DRAG turbo kit…pretty cool stuff…

Somebody said “hey fuck you guys”, and decided to bring out his 1974 Pantera. Yeah….

This is my last memory of the Fort Mason Festival Pavillion before it was filled up with rows and rows of cars and over 20,000 people…

Badass Mini Cooper…I took a couple more pics of this car before the day ended…

A couple of S2000s from Topdown waiting to roll-in…

Wayne aka 137 who posts comments regularly on this site…

The Starlet from earlier…

I liked this S13 coupe…

ATS Jay, his wife, and her Integra…

Another shot of the S13…

I’m sure you guys are familiar with this Airrunner/5Axis GS460. If not, you guys can find more pics of it by searching this site since I shot the car not too long ago…

More Mini…

I really liked this shot with the backdrop and everything…

The guys from Infinit Wheels arriving…

Anthony’s RHD CR-X…

Abraham’s Civic…

Ejay acting chipper…

The ass-end of the Mini…

ATS Jay’s CR-X with J’s Racing front lip, wait til you guys see the bay on this thing…

Anthony moving ahead in line…

This shot looks like it’s ready to do a burn-out and launch at the strip but it’s actually just cruising into the building to park…

Linda from Team Praxis rolling in her custom Matrix…

You guys probably remember me talking about this WRC wagon a couple weeks ago. I did a story on it for Super Street and it was cool to actually meet and speak to the owner in person. I rarely get the opportunity and the owner, Joseph, is a really pleasant dude to speak to…

Nissan 350Z on VIP Modular wheels…

Civic from VEX Motorsports…

Final shot of the day, and definitely one of my favorites of the whole trip…

That’s all for today, back with part 3 tomorrow…

  1. Washing a car in COLD ASS wet weather sucks. Weksos James is such a princess he puts on latex gloves to wash cars haha… I shortly also was wearing said latex gloves.

The gold S13 was super clean, it also looks like he had the oem widebody on the car which is damn near impossible to obtain or he has a jdm s13 with the oem widebody (which would make more sense, dur since it’s RHD) definite props on that car!

I’ll see you guys in Long beach in June, hopefully we get a nice Roscoes meet going on.

  2. Great coverage so far. Jay’s crx was beautiful. It was so clean. Love the last shot too. Nice scenery shots joey.

  3. I’m sure people will assume you’re exaggerating about the dude walking around with fire red Nike’s and a gold crown, but I was there, and that shit was as real as it gets.

  4. What’s the cuban place you wanted to take me to?

    Cha Cha Cha

    You can take me there

    BAM F&F reference

  5. That red DA never gets old, Waynes S14 is clean as always and those GS’s are serious. LOl @ Ejay, that little guys is funny. Good shots and commentary. 🙂

  6. It may have looked like us check in guys were being lazy, but i’ll be dammed if that’s notone of the most hectic jobs at these shows. Great coverage. Disappointed I didn’t stop by to say meet you. Another show perhaps.

  7. loving the coverage for part 2 joey!! the scenery is nice!! i love that frosty shot of my car too!! lol!

  8. Great shots, I like the one of the fort mason being empty and the JSJ civic rolling. Weather was freezing!!!! I got there like at 7:10 to see all the cars roll in!!

  9. Thanks for the coverage Joey! Totally random but I love the pics with the smoke coming out of the mufflers! We never get to see that kinda stuff out here in Guam.
