The Chronicles ‘Highway Attack Challenge’ in 16-Bit…

Anyone that knows me will tell you that I enjoy collecting things, especially if they are nostalgic and/or remind me of my childhood. I grew up in the ‘90s and a lot of my time was spent playing Super Nintendo. It was always so cool to go to the store and see new games come out and holding them in your hand after they were taken out from behind the display case. Just seeing all the boxes and the box art was so cool. Lately I’ve been trying to consistently be in a creative space so one day I decided to create something that had a mix of both my childhood and what I do as an adult now. I thought it’d be cool to imagine The Chronicles as an SNES Racing video game. It’s completely unrealistic because the eras don’t match-up, nor would a game ever have these types of features or graphics but the main thing I wanted to do was create the box art for this imaginary game.

So I created graphics using my photos as well as some old video game screenshots from the web and laid-out the artwork for what the SNES game box would look like. I spent like an unreasonable amount of time on this, lol, because I just have this stupid amount of detail I like to put into everything I do. It was fun so it was worth the effort. Once all the artwork was done, I hit up my boy Salem since he works in the toy packaging industry, and he helped me turn this game box into reality. I created individual screenshots for the box and even though they’re hard to see in the box, it just had to look as “real” as possible to me. I don’t know what the purpose of this was other than to just have fun and create some art. Salem made me a couple samples and delivered them to me and I was so stoked to see this come to fruition, lol. I figured I’d show you guys the project with the screens of this fake game that will never exist. I even thought about animating it too to make the game appear even more real but decided against it. I love having collectibles and these definitely make for something cool to have. Not sure what I’ll do with them from here but if you guys like it, maybe I’ll make some more and put them in the storefront in the future. It’s literally just a box, but filled with so many details…

Salem was able to print 3 copies of the box for me to look over and I was able to find my old Super Nintendo console that I had stashed away here at the shop. I have no idea where the cables and controllers are however…

When I say “insane amount of detail”, I mean it. The back of the box is laid out as a real game would have been back in the day and everything on the box is there for a reason. From the wording, the logos and everything beyond…

title screen

The title screen for this game that will never happen with an included “Story Mode” which takes you on an adventure through Osaka and its underground car culture…

shinsaibashi

It wouldn’t be an adventure into Osaka’s Kanjozoku culture without some assistance from our very own Ryan Der, who would guide you along the way in this Story Mode…

LIP SELECT

The game would feature many options to modify your vehicle. One of the most important aspects of the game would be styling the car so there are different aero options…

INGAME

Obviously there would not have been a way to encompass this type of graphics system into a SNES cartridge, especially considering all the options the game would have, so this is all very highly imaginary…

It’s fun to imagine though, isn’t it?…

exceed1080

The game’s Story Mode would not be complete without the inclusion of Yasu from Exceed Japan, who was instrumental in first introducing us to the Kanjozoku culture. The dialogue and story would all be based around our experiences in Osaka so those who have followed The Chronicles’ Japan adventures will understand the terminology and story arc…

LIVERYEDITOR

A detailed (for it’s time) Livery Editor would be included with the game so you could customize your Civic to the fullest with vinyl from familiar Chronicles’ regulars…

jdmogsan

Even the most (in)famous person to appear in BOWL’S “The Kanjozoku” documentary piece would make an appearance; a man who would come to be referred to as “JDM OG San” throughout Japan…

stolen

Welcome to Osaka. These things happen.

Not entirely sure what I’m going to do with these boxes but judging from the response I received in my Instagram post, it seems like these are high in demand. The plan now is to make some more and toss these up in the store so you guys that want to have it as a keepsake or art collectible can have one for yourselves…

AGAIN, THIS IS NOT REAL. It’s just a box.

Thanks for looking and diving into this imaginary world with me…

  1. Haha damn, really love this. Also: what’s up with buying NEW headlights? lol

  2. The factory new headlight thing is Yatsu’s code of honor when it comes to any car restoration.

This so called box and the funny screenshot preview surprised a lot of us!

Thumbs up to everyone at Chronicles for always being so creative.
