DSPORT Meet Up 2013 Coverage…

First off, sorry for the late update… I was trying to knock out this post while I was over at Rywire today but then I totally forgot that Sean from Narita Dog Fight was stopping by the shop to pick up some stuff. We ended-up just hanging out and showing him around the shop since he had never been there before. I also got to check out his Civic coupe for the first time as well after only seeing it in photos previously. It was a good day and worth delaying this post until I got home right now, haha…

Anyways, DSPORT put on this meet over the weekend and it was a little random since I hadn’t really seen it heavily advertised. I don’t know if DSPORT puts on a whole lot of meets but they are a big publication so you would think that they would be blasting the flyer everywhere. As many of you know, I do a lot of work for their competitor so I am not very familiar with them at all. I had some free time on Sunday since May was out of town on business so I decided to stop by to check it out. After talking to a couple of the homies who were more familiar with the event, I found out that it was a meet that they had organized for a production company that was making a reality TV show based on some of the ladies/import models in the scene. The show, titled “Roll Models”, (as quoted)’ is a reality show that explores the Asian American youth culture of Southern California and encompasses the underground worlds of import car modeling and gogo dancing.’ If that sounds like a bad idea to you, you’re not the only one. While I am all for the idea of putting import models on TV and getting some of these ladies some spotlight, I have a feeling that if this show goes anywhere, it’ll do nothing but reinforce negative stereotypes about our culture and bring about more negative attention that we all do not need. It won’t be to the level where The Fast and The Furious series left us, but it really can’t be a good thing. If reality shows have taught us anything, it’s that you don’t keep viewers by not having people do dumb shit on camera. They want that “train wreck” aspect because exploitation is what it’s all about in the world of reality TV. It’s a production company looking for ratings and attention by putting import models in front of a camera. I know of some of these girls that will be on the show too and they are doing great things for themselves, I just don’t see very many positive things happening for them as a result of being on this show. Maybe I’m completely wrong, but I just don’t see this doing any good for any of us…. In the end, I guess it is only a problem if people actually watch it, and right now, it is too early to tell if anyone even will…

With that out of the way, I guess we can move on with the photos… I arrived at the K1speed facility at around 12:30 pm that Sunday. The lot was pretty decently sized and it’s not a bad spot for a meet. The Formula D Tech Day event was just the weekend before in the same area and I’m sure the cops were already on alert. They were posted up outside of the Formula D meet because the city of Irvine just isn’t used to having car meets happen there. It’s a relatively upscale area and typically pretty quiet. I don’t see a whole lot of crime happening in that city either so the cops probably just have all kinds of time to hang out outside of meets. Like every meet, as long as nobody does anything stupid, you’ll be fine, but as expected, there is always one guy that acts like a complete jackass. At the DSPORT Meet, there were a couple of people who were thirsty for attention so they did the whole peeling out thing and smashing up and down the street so that everyone can hear their exhaust. One VW owner even decided to blast down the street, not even taking the time to notice that a police cruiser was just a few cars behind him. The police immediately lit him up and everyone at the meet cheered and clapped as justice did its work…

Overall, the meet was pretty decent. The turnout was good for an event that wasn’t heavily advertised and it seemed as if people had a good time. Weather has been good lately so that is always a plus whenever you’re planning an event. The highlight of the event had to have been the Instant Ramen Noodle-eating contest towards the end and I was happy to have been able to capture that on camera…

One of the first cars that caught my eye was this FA5 Civic sedan with FD2 conversion, J’s Racing front grille, J’s front lip, and gunmetal Volk TE37SLs…

This bagged 7th gen. Accord was pretty interesting. I don’t know enough to tell you all about these cars or anything but I do know that it has a JDM Accord Inspire front bumper. Not a bad looking car by any means, you just don’t see very many of these heavily modded…

Does anyone remember that scammer Duke Tubtim from back in the early 2000s who owned an NSX very similar to this? I don’t know if anyone can confirm or not but this might actually be the same car. It has the same Burn-Up kit, same Volk GT7s, and same brakes, even the hood is the same. I wonder if he sold the car to someone else or if he’s recently resurfaced. I don’t know how many people actually knew about this car at the meet that day but if it’s the same one, man, it’s crazy to see it still in the exact same condition. This dude was the guy who ran Kaizen Marketing and did that whole 2by2.net pyramid scheme. I thought I’d seen a ghost when I saw this car that day… Here is a photo of the NSX that I was referring to from back in 2003 at a Showoff Classic event…  You can still Google his name and the NSX will appear, along with a Ripoff Report posting about his scammings…

Bay Mao’s turbo S2000 that has run into a string of bad luck as of late. You’ll notice his ill-fitting front bumper and that is due to him having been hit by another car on the street, which ruined his Spoon front bumper. He hasn’t had a chance to fix it yet and after this event that Sunday, the car caught on fire for some unknown reason… It’s a shame because this build has some real potential…

Random to see Nongshim Ramen sponsoring a car meet but I guess there’s a first time for everything. Probably helps to get some TV exposure in there as well with the filming of the Roll Models show and all… On a side note, I don’t know if having Psy as a celebrity endorser would really help improve the sales of Nongshim Ramen. You know who is a good representative for them? Uhh… POVERTY and HUNGER. The only time you ever eat these things is when you’re broke as fuck and have no other options. Either that or you’re hungry and too lazy to make your own food so you pour boiled water into a bowl with dried noodles in hopes of consuming large amounts of sodium and to temporarily satisfy your need to eat. You know how I know? Because I am poor and hungry!…

Digging the colorway used on this EVO. A lot of times, many of the EVOs share very similar parts and the only way to really stand out is to utilize some different color accents. I like the teal on the grey, mixed in with the usual black/white…

And now, onto my favorite shots from that day during the Nongshim Ramen Eating Contest…

IMG_2924-Edit

The idea behind this contest was to get a bunch of dudes who wanted to eat Instant Ramen, make them put their arms behind their backs, and see who could eat the fastest while being fed by import models. The concept was cool but the execution was a little lacking. They gathered everyone up front for the contest but then they didn’t have the hot water prepared yet to cook the noodles. When you get hot scolding water and pour it in the cup, it usually takes a couple minutes before you can eat it, because well, it’s fucking hot. In this contest, it didn’t matter though because if you wanted to win a 32-inch TV, you had to allow an import model to burn your mouth…

I don’t know how far it was but the winner, pictured above, was actually a guy that worked for Nongshim Ramen. You can’t really fix a competition like this but maybe the guy had a lot of practice before…

…and winner of some random 32-inch TV from Wal-Mart!…

That’s a wrap on this set of photos. Thanks for looking and be sure to check out “Roll Models” and let me know how it is…PEACE.

    Thanks for the photos, Joey!

  2. That’s actually the same NSX Duke had back in the early 2000’s, it belongs to another person now.

  3. thanks for snapping pics and recognizing my JDM gold 7th gen accord.
