I’ve never been one to post coverage of an event really late but with all that is going on lately, I just merely forgot all about these photos. It wasn’t until one of my guest photographers, Jimmy Nguyen, posted one of his shots on Instagram did I realize that these photos were still sitting on my hard drive. When he originally sent me these photos, I was busy putting the Super Street Honda Issue together and these just got lost in the mix somewhere. Soon after, my contributor Shota Mori from Japan sent me his photos as well and they too, got lost. This was a unique event so I wanted to get some photos out there from it so now we get to see it today. I sincerely apologize to these two guys because I really appreciated their effort and I didn’t want them to think that their stuff was ignored…
The “Funny Night” VTEC Meet was a pretty unique concept. The idea was to hold a meet on the exact same date from three different parts of the world; Japan, Northern California, and Hawaii. How this all comes together and played out is a complete mystery to me but from seeing all the media from various people from all over, I gathered that it was a great success. The most confusing part of putting something like this together is that it technically wouldn’t be all on the same day, being that Japan is a day ahead of us. Hawaii and Norcal wouldn’t be too much of a problem, they just wouldn’t happen all at the same time since Norcal is a couple hours ahead of Hawaii on the time zone. I don’t actually have photos from the Hawaii side but hey, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad, haha. This event was put on in collaboration by Osaka JDM, ATS Garage USA, and the guys from JSpirit in Hawaii. It was originally meant to be more of a Honda-exclusive event but anytime you have a big event like this, you’re going to get cars of all makes and models. Everybody wants in on events like this because it is kind of unique in design and the idea of having three events happen on the same day just sounds “cool”…
I’m going to kick it off today with a photo set from the Norcal Funny Meet, captured by Jimmy Nguyen. I didn’t even expect him to cover the event for me but he was kind enough to pass these photos along to me. Once we go through his photos from Norcal, we head over to Osaka, Japan, where we get to catch a glimpse of the happenings at the Funny Meet hosted by Osaka JDM. You’ll notice quite a bit of difference between the two events because the Norcal side is filled with cars that are very much “modern” in trends and style whereas the Japan side consists of cars that are more consistent to the original style of the Kansai region…
Thanks to Jimmy Nguyen for the great work and always a great deal of thanks goes out to Shota Mori for his work in Japan…

Now, on the other side of the world, the Funny Meet was documented by Shota Mori. Since the event was held in the dark of night, it was understandably difficult to capture photos. Nonetheless, Mori-san did his best and here are a couple of snaps from Funny Night Meet in Osaka, Japan…
A quick snap before the meet started when Mori visited tuning specialists, TRY-BOX…
The Osaka-side of the Funny Night event featured more of Osaka’s traditional Kanjo racers than the street/show cars you saw from Northern California…
Sport VIP-themed Toyota Aristo with a huge front mount intercooler…
DB8 Honda Integra wearing a Mugen front bumper and silver Mugen MF8….

LAW BREAK EK passing through…
Mugen Motul-replica EA-T Civic race car on Work CR-01…
During my travels in Japan, this chrome-wrapped Civic has always eluded me. Judging by the body damage, this thing probably has some very interesting stories to tell…
The Civic that really injected life into Osaka’s Honda community when it was first introduced to the world in the 80s. Good to see that the EA-T aka the “Wonder Civic” is still highly-regarded in 2014…
If there’s one car you won’t see a shortage of in Osaka, it would definitely be the Civic….
EF hatchback on bronze Volk TE37 reppin’ TRY-BOX…
Artwork on the hood of the EA-T Motul build that I believe is from Minami-san, who pens a popular Kanjo-themed manga series in Japan called “Naniwa-Tomoare”…
If there were two central themes of Osaka car culture, it would be puffy jackets and Civics, haha….
…and of course, it wouldn’t be true Osaka car culture without some sort of police presence…
Always thought this Mercedes big body looked great on Work Meister S1R…
An EA-T from NO GOOD RACING. The EF I believe is from LOOSE Racing. If not, it could also be from NGR…
LAW BREAK EK once again, always on the move…
Making a rare appearance in his legendary Kanjo EF Civic was Kei Miura from T.R.A Kyoto/Rocket Bunny…
Though he’s heavily involved in building kits for other makes and models, he still has his Rocket Bunny EF and cruises in it on occasion…
You can actually see Miura in the background of this photo by his EF chatting with Kazuhiro Furukawa from Osaka JDM…
This is where the coverage ends. Again, I wish there were more photos but shooting in these conditions isn’t exactly ideal. Thanks to Mori for even taking the time to do it in the first place. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have anything to look at.
That’s a wrap folks, thanks for looking! Sorry for the lack of updates lately but things are picking up quickly so stay tuned!…
Wicked stuff man!!! Loved it. Keep up the good work.
