Esteban Gonzalez’s Spoon Sports K20 Fit in Photos…

Esteban’s Spoon Sports-themed Honda Fit was featured on the Super Street website not too long ago, but I wanted to get my own photos of it when he came by last weekend for our YouTube Vlog “Drive-By” series. The car has seen some changes since its feature so it was important for me to capture its most recent iteration. This is probably one of the more anticipated cars we’ve put on the site as of late and likely one of the better builds to come out of 2020 thus far. I first saw it in-person when Gonzalez brought it to our one and only Chronicles and Coffee event this year. The Fit was pretty much done by that time but he mentioned that he was having more work done to it soon. A week later, I found out that the car was actually with our friend Ken Suen. He was tasked to put a new radiator in it and to fix some things to help alleviate some cooling issues it was having. For whatever reason, having a K-series inside a GE8 chassis presents itself with the engine running hot with increased intake air temperatures…

I originally thought that Esteban and Ken knew each other and that is why he took his Fit to Ken’s place to get worked-on but I found out just this past weekend that Esteban was introduced to Ken through our Vlogs. Knowing Ken would be putting in some work on the Fit and the Fit coming over to our shop after he was done with it, I thought it would be cool to invite Ken to come along when we did some video on it. Having him speak about his own work and the thought process that went behind it would only help to make our video even more interesting…

Hopefully you guys have seen the Vlog by now, but if you haven’t, please give it a watch. It’s a good one. This was also the first “Drive-By” feature that we’ve done where we actually got some in-car footage. The idea of a K20A inside a Fit is already cool, but hearing it and getting the ‘feel’ of riding in it was important…

Here is the Vlog if you haven’t seen it yet…

For the photos, I always try to get some exterior shots of whatever car we are featuring and some of its more important details. There’s always photos of us around the car as well since I use those shots for the YouTube cover images and social media postings. Esteban’s Fit is pretty incredible so making it look good in photos was no difficult task. I just looked at some of the photos from its Super Street feature and captured more of the details of the car that haven changed since so it doesn’t feel like you’re looking at the same thing…

Huge thanks to Esteban again for coming by and giving us the opportunity to look through his build. It was truly a pleasure…

The lighting was a bit harsh when we first started filming, so I put the GoPro down so I could get take advantage of the lighting and shadows to capture some photos of the Fit…

309A1717-Edit

It actually worked out that we couldn’t film right away because it allowed the guys to chat and build a repertoire before we started filming being that they all didn’t know each other very well…

This particular setting doesn’t yield the best photos since the buildings surrounding it are a bit boring. Hell, even the tree isn’t real so I had to really play around with shadows to make some dynamic shots…

We started with the interior where we were introduced to his now gutted interior which was filled with Spoon Sports goodies…

Custom-made roll bar created by a friend of Esteban’s to his specifications…

309A1706-Edit

The roll bar has provisions to mount the Takata safety harnesses but Esteban decided it was better to utilize the harness bar which was built into the cage…

Esteban’s Fit wasn’t quite complete last year when the “I Heart Honda” event took place out here in Southern California, but it didn’t stop him from bringing a panel from his front dash to be signed by Tatsuru Ichishima…

I asked Esteban if we could remove his front bumper to get a good look at the engine bay and some of the work that Ken Suen had recently done to it…

309A1766-Edit

Ken’s work included creating this custom radiator, built using a C&R core, a new core support for the hood latch, radiator overflow tank, and air intake shield…

The engine itself is a K20A from an Accord Euro-R mounted to the Fit via Hasport engine mounts and a PRC intake manifold for engine bay clearance…

If you aren’t familiar with the GE8 Fit, you wouldn’t notice that it looked any different, but those in the know would recognize that this was a Spoon Sports front bumper and hood, as well as a complete JDM Fit front conversion, which was no easy task to install…
