Formula D Long Beach 2012 Tech Day Coverage…

Read that title again…it’s not “Formula D Long Beach 2012 Coverage”…because my time machine is broken right now, it’s the “Formula D Long Beach 2012 TECH DAY Coverage”….There was no drifting, no real action, just a whole lot of drift cars making “brap brap brap” sounds and then driving into a building to get inspected. I honestly didn’t even know this was going on until maybe the night before the event. I had seen on Facebook that there was a small meet which was dubbed a “casting call” by Super Street and Import Tuner but I didn’t know it coincided with the Formula D tech day. This was held at the Source Interlink Irvine offices and served as a small meet as well where cars would come by and possibly get scouted to be in one of the Source Interlink books. I didn’t expect a whole lot from this event because it wasn’t heavily advertised and when DPK David and I arrived at the event, my assumptions were correct. It was just a very small gathering of cars and an interesting mix of different makes and models. The Formula D cars came and went because they were just there for the tech inspection, but I got what I could. I don’t have any details on the tech day itself because I don’t know that much about drifting these days, and I am not a Formula D official. We all just hung out for awhile and chatted and took off awhile later because, as you saw  yesterday, I had a surprise birthday party to attend. With that said, let’s get this going….

Loved this Z33 with SSR Type-Fs from R-Rydes. If you aren’t familiar with this car, it is the infamous “Ruined Z” that was once the talk of the internet a couple years back. The owner took his 350Z to this shit hole of a bodyshop known as iDesigns where they did everything possible to not complete the job of installing a body kit. They used wood screws to hold on the sideskirts, did a horrible job painting it, etc…it was a mess. I’m happy to see this car looking great these days though. A lesser owner would have given up on the car after the ordeal he had to go through…

IMG_8258

Another clean Z33…this one on Volk LE37s…

IMG_8257

One of the first things I noticed when I rolled up to this event was this S13 hatchback with a gutter-ass intercooler spray-painted with the words “HONDA KILLER” on it…haha…better save up some money and have some better taste before you attempt to kill any Hondas…

IMG_8261

Always enjoy seeing really clean builds like this NA-chassis Mazda MX-5 Miata on Work Equip 03s….

IMG_8264

Honda S2000 with Amuse or “Amuse-style” aero…

IMG_8266

’33 Ford hot rod that sits inside the Source Interlink offices in Irvine…

IMG_8338

Inside the bays of the Source Interlink offices are multiple lifts where the Formula D participants had their cars inspected…

IMG_8270

Widebody Honda S2000 from 1UP crew…

IMG_8271

The event also played host to the most Elite of the stock NSXs…

IMG_8273

EP3 Civic on Formula Hart wheels with a Mugen grille and lip….

IMG_8276

This was totally random but I spotted this Lancer Evolution III at the meet. Not only was it rare to see, it was also left-hand drive….With the 4-lug it may very well be a Mitsubishi Lancer with a Evo III conversion…

IMG_8277

Ran into this second generation Scion xB with a pretty large intercooler….something with a large intercooler unit like this must have a pretty large turbo, right?…

IMG_8279

…apparently not… Also strange to see people rocking stickers that just say “HATE” on it now too…The word “hate” is starting to become more overused than the word “JDM”…Overall, not a bad looking car though…

IMG_8282

This MX32 Toyota Cressida is a pretty cool build from Sparkle Garage…Within their circle, it’s known more as the “JZX32 Shakotan Zombie”…

IMG_8283

…”JZX32″ because this Cressida sports a VVT-i N/A 2JZ-GE engine swap from a Toyota Aristo/Lexus GS300…. The box on the bottom of the photo actually houses the Cressida’s ECU…

IMG_8284

Really liked this 180SX-converted S13 hatchback but he was leaving as I approached it so I couldn’t get a closer look…

IMG_8297

The meet hosted a couple of nice Z32 300ZXs, which are rare to see these days considering how they weren’t very popular even in it’s time… This was one of the better examples at the meet…

IMG_8280

IMG_8292

This was another nice Z32….Both on Work Meister S1 wheels but the latter had caps…

IMG_8295

And here is a random crappy metal scoop on a Subaru WRX…not sure if this is to help drive air into the motor or if the owner has a pet hamster…

IMG_8299

IMG_8298

5th generation 7-Series BMW on Vorsteiner wheels…

IMG_8307

Z31 Nissan Z on SSR wheels…I believe this was the same Z that used to be pink…

IMG_8347

This is Daigo Saito’s new Achilles Tire-sponsored Toyota Soarer/Lexus SC430 drift car that is set to make it’s debut at Formula D Long Beach…I’m told it was built in Japan and brought over to the U.S. to compete in the Formula D series. It’s THE car to watch in 2012 because it’s a 1200hp 2JZ-GTE monster that will be piloted by D1/FD Asia’s 2011 champion…

IMG_8310

Check out the dual rear Wilwood brake calipers and the notched brake rotors…

IMG_8312

A glimpse of the 1200 horsepower 2JZ…

IMG_8318

The Soarer being loaded-up on an Emergency Hookers flat-bed truck after inspection….

IMG_8321

Besides the massive rear wing, check out the underside of the car with the radiator and dual electric fans…

IMG_8329

Ross Petty’s S15 Silvia drift car from Garage Boso….sporting a new livery this year with a hint of his political views…

IMG_8333

Not sure what this candy red Z33 drift car with HRE wheels had under the hood but it was extremely loud as it rolled into the lot…

IMG_8335

The air cleaner sticking out through the center of the hood shows that it’s probably a GM LSx V8 but don’t quote me on that…

IMG_8334

The interior of the 350Z….

IMG_8350

Clean AE86 coupe on Work Equip 01s…

IMG_8351

One more shot of the Soarer/SC430…

IMG_8288

Closing out this portion of coverage with a shot of the JZX32 Zombie driving away…

That’s a wrap for today…With things being so slow lately, I’m leaning towards going to the Formula D Long Beach event to grab some coverage…stay tuned…

  1. hey thanks for the picture of the red s13 its mine. you got some good photography skills, and i respect you for saying what you said about my car but now here is my opinon…. before you go and talk shit on peoples cars you should actually ask about the car. i only did that for fun. i have alot of friends that have hondas and we all laugh about it. i have respect for the CLEAN honda’s. i have seen some clean ass ones. Next time u see it u should see whats under the hood before you actually start saying eveything bad about my car.yeh its beaten up and everything but hey it gets used like a car should be it has battle scars from being tracked cause i beat the shit out of it but still take care of it. its a daily and its a full track car. drift it at the track every week and it gets the job done on and off the track. and its not some fake intercooler like i see some hondas using it as a cold air filter bull shit. its real suplying the cold air i need for the rb25det underneath the hood. and i have alot of HONDA freinds that can vouch for me and my car. thanks again for the clean picture of it. 🙂

    • you can do whatever you want with your car, but at least you should see why someone would get upset. I parked my blue Fit behind your car and noticed the message on your rear window too.

    • I appreciate the response. I don’t however, retract my statements about the car. You do realize that when you put “_______ KILLER” anywhere on your car, you’re automatically putting yourself in the position to be criticized right? I think it’s a little ridiculous to believe otherwise. You’re blatantly making a statement that directs the attention of other’s towards yourself and that attention isn’t always going to be positive. It’s cool that you and your friends think it’s hilarious but again, think for a second think that everyone else is going to get your “inside joke”. My opinions on your car have remained unchanged. While I think it’s commendable that you daily your car and you drift it at events every weekend, I still think that you aren’t in any position to “kill” any other car no matter what make or model it is. What is under the hood is also not anything that would immediately change my mind on what I think of your car and if it’s okay that you spray-painted “HONDA KILLER” on your intercooler. Congratulations on having a RB25 swap and daily driving your car, I stand behind my comments though.

  2. Love it. Some hot shots of the zombie too.

    LOL@the S13 as well.

  3. EVO III are factory 4×114.3 hubs, EVO IV was the first to be 5×114.3 . Non EVO Lancers are 4×100 when the same shape as EVO III

  4. Thanks for the pic of the champagne s13 hatch/180sx conversion that’s my car =)

  5. Talked to the owner of that EVO III conversion a while back. It’s a mirage(or something of that sort) that’s full converted to an EVO 3. It’s 4WD and everything. A very respectable conversion that takes a lot of time and labor. He mentioned a couple of things that he hasn’t converted, such as the fact that it’s LHD but a clean build indeed.

  6. You being a somewhat professional photographer probably shouldnt throw your negativity towards any car no matter the circumstances…if you dislike it dont take its picture, simple as that. Its called professionalism and acting like the adult I assume you are. That being said, you have some good shots.

    • Me being a “somewhat professional photographer” has no bearing on what content I put up on my own personal site. I’m comfortable with the idea that I can do as I please in my own space. If people don’t like what I say, they don’t have to read it or come back. We are all adults here and can say what we please. If someone isn’t open to criticism, they shouldn’t draw attention to themselves in a public event. I think your idea of “professionalism” and “acting like an adult” are misconstrued. Thanks for visiting the site though and making assumptions.

  7. Dunlop Formula CP-R’s on the EP3 are nice.

  8. Nothing like a few choice words to get the blood flowing. Really enjoyed reading your intellectual sarcasm in your replies, I have to admit. Today’s comments were more interesting than “nice pics” or “Dope car”.

  9. you wonder why people put the word “HATE” on their car? its because people like you. you had something negative to say about a majority of the cars you had pictures of. yea sure you may not respect some of the taste of modifications, but hey thats what makes the car culture cool. PEOPLE DOING SHIT THEY WANT TO DO not following all the trends that are here today gone tomorrow. i say right on to the beat s-13 i bet that car puts in work, i say right on to the blue subaru with the vent its unique and right on to the scion with the huge FMIC its his money and so on…….

if you don’t like it don’t take pictures of it, or just leave the description blank. people want to see the cars not listen to you gripe about them

    • Thanks for stopping by! I’m actually very content with how my site is run. While I understand why you feel the need to comment. Let me remind you that what I provide isn’t a service. This is a personal site based on what I see, and despite what you think. The people that come to this site do come to read my ridiculous comments and look at photos. While you may not agree with me, no one has forced you to stay, nor have you been charged a fee to see the content that I have taken time out of my life to provide. I hope you come back and find something you like, if not, again, no one is forcing you to stay. Thank you for your input random stranger.

  10. sticky keeps it real. its his site and his opinion. we all got an opinion right? no need to argue with him about it.

keep up the good work bro! love the site

  11. Thanks for posting my car up first! Great shot of it, too! I’m glad there are people out there that still know about my story and are spreading the word. See you at Formula D!

  12. So when will you post a picture of your ride(s) so we can give you a piece of our mind on it/them? =D

  13. Wow guys there’s no need to get butt hurt over a car that says “Honda killer”. You Americans need to chill out… Clean the sand out of you’re vagina’s or something. It’s not like he came up to you and said “Hey dude you’re Honda is a piece of shit”
“you can do whatever you want with your car, but at least you should see why someone would get upset.” – The problem I have there is I don’t see why you would get upset over it… When an import says V8 KILLER on it or a WRX with EVO KILLER people don’t sook about it and get offended. They are more likely to say lets take our cars down the strip or whatever.
I know if I owned a Honda I would be like I want to see the engine bay of that for sure.
All in all you are probably thinking of multiple things to say to me right now and I respect that you run you’re sight how you run it. I just find it bitchy and childish that it offended you guys as grown men..

  14. yeah that 350z had a dodge v8. lucky i got a video of it on my youtube channel of it as they took it out of the trailer.
