I find it utterly hilarious when people decide to take the time to tell me what I’m doing wrong. Some anonymous individual commented yesterday to tell me that while I was doing a good job with the photos, I shouldn’t follow the rest of the crowd and take photos of cars that are all sponsored vehicles and not built by “real car guys”, as if to say that any and every person that was photographed in my coverage was only done so because their cars weren’t built with their own money, blood, sweat, tears, etc. The fact that you insinuate that these people “aren’t real car guys” is an insult to not only everyone that participated in the WEKEAST event, but also an insult to your own intelligence. It’s amazing that you automatically assume that a car is not built and owned by an enthusiast like yourself because they have had any measure of attention from photographers or other websites. Just because you didn’t get the type of attention that you felt you deserved or maybe your friends deserved, it doesn’t mean that other people are more privileged than you. If I were one of the guys at the show and saw you say something like that, I would take offense to it. In reality a majority of these cars are built by individuals who work regular jobs and who live regular every day lives just like you. If for some reason they got more media attention than you, you should applaud them and be happy for them, not bitch and complain and say that they aren’t “real car guys”. Your statement was made out of pure ignorance and it shows how unfamiliar you are with the people within the entire scope of your automotive community…

If that wasn’t bad, I got another guy who emailed me specifically to complain that I only got a small section of his car in the background of a photo that I took. Okay stupid complaint but it doesn’t end there…here’s the kicker, this individual also made it a point to tell me that he spent $70,000 on his car and all he got was a shot of his wheel in the background. Are you serious? All of a sudden, because you went and blew $70K on your car, I automatically have to take a photo of your car? How utterly ridiculous do you think you sound, really? I could honestly give a fuck less about how much you spent on your car and the fact that you had to email me specifically to complain shows that I made the right decision by not noticing your car in the first place…

Some of these guys out there act like I didn’t just fly across the fucking country to go cover an event on my own time. It’s not like I was assigned to document every single car at the show. This is MY site where I cover what catches MY eye. If you don’t like it, go buy a camera, learn how to write, and go start your own fucking site. How about that? Until then, I’ll continue to do my thing and if you don’t like it, go look at the other 1,000 or so websites out there. You have options. The nerve of some of these people man, I swear…

Today, we’re gonna be taking a look at some more sponsored vehicles not built by real car guys with cars in the background whose owners spent $70K on them only to not be photographed. I run a tight ship, what can I say. Shout-out to everyone who didn’t build their cars but somehow still had a car to bring to a show. And those vendors that were there, how dare you have cars at your booth that weren’t built by anyone. That’s like a oxymoron or something. And for the three or four guys at the show who actually built their own cars and are real legitimate car enthusiasts, I’m sorry I didn’t get a picture of your car because we weren’t playing Indian Poker and you didn’t have a card on your head that told me you were a real car guy who has 70K to spend on your build. My bad! Next time I’ll have a million great things to say about people I know nothing about, and then you can turn around and comment and assume things about me that aren’t true. Doesn’t that sound like fun? Haha…

Let’s begin…

It’s crazy how things change when I leave the comforts of the West Coast. At shows out here, the cars that typically win the “Best Honda” class competitions are 92-95 or 97-00 Civics. Competition is incredibly fierce with those two chassis’ and del Sols and CR-Zs are not as heavily modified. What I learned when I went out to Texas last year was that there are a specific number of guys out there who are willing to take the more unpopular platforms to another level. In Texas, the overall 1st Place winner in the Honda Class was a del Sol, and at WEKEAST, a del Sol also ended-up winning albeit in the top tier “Best of Show” class. 1st Place Best Honda at WEKEASt went to Marc Ducrow, who built this incredibly detailed Mugen ZF1 CR-Z.  The best thing about this particular build is how unassuming it is. It doesn’t have a crazy engine bay, it’s not slammed on aggressive wheels, and it doesn’t have anything that would make it stand-out other than for those who really understand Hondas and Mugen products. Even I was a little shocked when I finally got a closer look at it and discovered what it all consisted of. There are so many incredibly rare Mugen components on it that it’ll probably blow your mind…

What immediately stands out is the complete Mugen aero kit and the 17×8 Mugen MF10s, but it is what you can’t see right away that makes it awesome. This CR-Z also has adjustable Mugen suspension and the 4-Pot Monoblock big brakes up front are Mugen brakes as well but retrofitted from an FN2 Civic Euro Type R model. Inside you’ll find Mugen MSZ Recaro seats, Mugen Edition Defi Advance Control gauges, Mugen floor mats, rare Mugen trunk mat, and the only non-Mugen piece is a BackYard Special shifter surround panel. There are still a ton more Mugen pieces that I can’t think of off the top of my head at the moment but I think you guys get the drift here. It took him a ton of time to source all these pieces and it all comes together very well. Though it is a new platform, the way everything is executed makes it an instant classic and a timeless build. Attention to the most minor of details makes it one of the best in the building that day…

Nissan GTR from Team EMOTION with a rare set of 20-inch BBS CH-R wheels. BBS only released 50 sets of these worldwide and this R35 has set number 36. They are all individually numbered on the face of the wheel which is pretty cool…

Parked right next to Marc Ducrow’s CR-Z was another Mugen masterpiece, Chris Rios’ Mugen SS S2000. Rios is a bit of a legend out in the East and a name that people recognize all over the country. He built a Mugen Integra almost a decade ago that you would think was assembled less than a year ago because it is so timeless that it is current, if that makes sense. It is one of my favorite DC2 builds of all-time so it was a pleasure to not only see his S2000, but also to meet Chris. Oh and if you’re wondering, he still has the Integra and it hasn’t changed very much over the years. The exterior of Rios’ S2K features the Mugen SS front bumper, SS rear bumper, Mugen dry carbon hood, Mugen rear spoiler, and authentic Mugen hard top. Behind his 17-inch Mugen MF10s are Endless brakes and JIC Magic suspension. It shows how long Chris has been around because he is one of the few guys still running JIC Magic stuff…

Under the dry carbon hood is a boosted F20C motor with an Inline Pro V2 turbo kit. The head was also built by Inline Pro and from what I remember, the motor makes just around 600HP. Pretty nuts. You can’t see it in the photos but he also has an Mugen SS exhaust system too…

Inside, you’ll find Mugen S1 bucket seats, Mugen FG360 steering wheel, Mugen roll bar, and Takata Safety harnesses…

One of the builds that I was interested to see in person at WEKEAST was Alex Witkin’s wild Subaru WRX STI build. The car was sitting on the floor at this year’s WEKEAST but it has air jacks and all kinds of craziness like Chargespeed D1 20mm wide fenders, Rays Gram Lights front bumper, sideskirts, front bumper air ducts, Do-Luck trunk lid, and so much more. Just an insane amount of stuff in this build that sometimes gets overlooked because of the engine bay…

Despite the lack of, well, anything other than a motor and turbo visible, this vehicles does indeed run. I watched it drive in and out of the building with no issues and it was running very smoothly. The motor is a built EJ25 STI block with EJ20 heads with a T04R turbo. The bay is shaved completely smooth and the wheel wells have been tubbed and modified…

One of the more detailed Honda builds at WEKEAST was this FA5 Honda Civic SI. The outside features subtle flares that allow the owner to fit these aggressive SSR Professor SP3s, and a Mugen RR-style front bumper with the center cut-out to make room for the massive front mount intercooler. Under the hood is a Full Race turbo kit and the interior and trunk has a lot of custom audio components. Just a really well-rounded build and props to the owner. The cool part about it was that the owner wasn’t even around when I went to go judge the car initially and his wife walked me through the car and told me all about it. Pretty awesome, haha…
