Ryan Der and I decided to make the 3-hour drive out to Chuckwalla this past weekend to support our friends from the Club Racer event series. There hasn’t been much going lately due to, well, very obvious reasons so it seemed like a good time to go outside into some wide-open spaces to see some car stuff. This particular event at Chuckwalla wasn’t a competitive one but more of a ‘preseason’ event to get enthusiasts ready for the racing series in 2021. It wasn’t crowded and there weren’t too many cars at the track this time around, but the weather was nice and overall, the day was pretty relaxing. We both brought our cameras to get some coverage but since there wasn’t too much going on, I found myself just hanging out and catching-up with friends. The drive was long but seeing friends is never a bad thing, and my one major takeaway from going to Chuckwalla was finally seeing Andrew Horn’s Civic all finished-up. The car has been down for some time now as it was going through a major overhaul but he wrapped it up in time to do some testing. Most of my photos from this event are actually just of Andrew’s Civic but it felt weird to just call it “Andrew Horn’s Civic Photos” as the title without any context or history. I want to see that I wish I shot more but the people at Chuckwalla weren’t too keen on having people shooting on the track this time around so I couldn’t get any cool photos like last time. Oh well, still a fun day. Enjoy the photos…
Alex Cao’s Civic is looking solid these days with his bronze 15-inch Volk TEs and RS Future coilovers on the car. It sits nice and low but runs even better after Kristian from Battlecraft went through the car and got the mechanical stuff situated…
Justin Yoo’s S2000 with a fresh new K1 Laboratory front face on. Excited to see it color-matched eventually…
Andrew Horn’s Civic is one of those Southern California staple builds that many people don’t hear much of because it isn’t seen often these days. Horn is the original owner of this car, meaning that he purchased it brand new, and the car has gone through many iterations since. It was once the Password: JDM poster child and was featured in Honda Tuning magazine before Horn transformed it into a serious time attack vehicle. It spent much of its life with a B-series engine in it but he recently decided to evolve the Civic once again by going with a K20 heart transplant…
If I remember correctly, the K20 has not been modified internally and is still the factory 2.0L Honda engine as it was intended. There has been plenty done on the outside, however, with the K-series heart looking anything but ‘factory’…
The first thing that should grab your attention right away other than the bright neon valve cover is the carbon fiber intake manifold from a Malaysian company known as PracWorks Carbon. I first encountered this intake manifold in Japan, when I saw it on Kenneth Lau’s ITR at Attack Tsukuba 2020. Since then, guys like Amir Bentatou and Andrew Horn have decided to give these nifty carbon manifolds a try with promising results…
The backside of the PracWorks intake manifold with its black anodized aluminum frame and carbon runners…
Andrew has spared no expense on his K-swap, opting to utilize XRP HS79 green-braided hoses to plumb the powerplant along with their Clamshell filter…
Andrew is a total hands-on guy when it comes to building his Civic and custom-fabricated an adapter plate to run a 68mm Bosch drive-by-wire throttle body to pair with his PRB intake flange…
Club Racer was the first true test day for his new set-up to see how well the electronically-controlled throttle worked with his motor…+
From the top-side you can see his Skunk2 Alpha series K-swap header, both external reservoirs for his JRZ suspension, as well as his nifty custom oil catch can…
The interior of his Civic is full gutted and caged, with only the top half of the dashboard remaining in place. The factory cluster is gone, supplanted with a fancy MoTec full-color display to monitor all engine operations…
Mounted to the center of the dash is a Rywire PDM providing accessibility to just about everything…
A K-Tuned shifter box gets the car into gear with an AIM module right behind it which controls an onboard camera…
Engine management comes by way of an Emtron KV8 ECU from Australia, appropriately mounted ‘down under’ the dashboard…
When not in use, the Sparco steering wheel is propped-up on a mount affixed to the custom roll cage…
The view of the interior through the door bars of the cage…
Cool little Top Fuel 1000 badge mounted to the A/C vent delete plate…
The rear remote reservoirs of the JRZ suspension attached to the rear chassis reinforcement bar in the trunk of the Civic…
Nankang rubber paired with 15-inch Volk Racing TE37SL…
A glimpse of the completely gutted factory doors and door bars…
The vented hood provides a perfectly-sized window for a look at the beautifully-crafted PracWorks carbon fiber intake manifold…
FAL windows to shed some more weight off of Andrew’s Civic…
Overall, just a very-detailed, incredibly well-built Civic race car. If there were more of these cars around and out at race events, I’m sure we’d get more spectators and participants in American time attack…
Not too far away from Andrew Horn’s Civic was John Cruz’s new shop car project which started-off as just a single-cam RHD-converted Civic. He purchased it and just added extra parts that he had laying around to get it to where it is right now. The SOHC engine was pulled immediately and replaced with a 1.8L B18C GS-R engine…
Bronze 15-inch Volk TE37 wheels which he also probably just had laying around at the shop…
John spent the day driving with Daniel Fuentes and his Midori Green B20-powered Civic…
Yosh, Der, and Ara chillin in the back of Kristian’s Toyota pick-up. Ara actually drove on the track for the first time in a 2017 Civic and had a lot of fun…
A couple of shots of Sean Lucas from NDF’s Lexus IS-F project on Advan Racing TC4 since the lighting was getting pretty decent…
Kristian getting prepped to go out for some laps in Alex Cao’s Civic…
Kristian and Mandy getting some alone time at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway…
Fuentes wanted to try out a different tire on his Civic so he swapped wheels with John. He decided he was done for the afternoon after mildly bending his core support and just enjoyed his phone while Fuentes was driving…
I don’t even know what kind of car this is. It just looked perfect against the backdrop of CVR with the sun-setting…
Duane took Andrew’s Civic out for a couple of laps and just hung out after to chat…
They’re either talking about cars or…cars…
Sean Lucas talking to Will in his wild Lexus IS-F project…
Chuckwalla is definitely the best-looking race track in Southern California. When the sun sets and you get that golden hour, boy does everything look amazing. On that note, it’s a wrap on this small set of photos. There’s a new Vlog coming this week so keep an eye out for it. Thanks for looking!!…
