Attack Tsukuba and Zummy Racing Time Attack 2023 Coverage… Part 2…

After the Zummy Racing event ended the day prior, we had dinner and checked into our hotel for the evening. There wasn’t a whole lot to do out in Ibaraki so we decided to just rest-up. I edited photos, went through some videos for a Vlog episode and called it a night. We got up pretty early to head to Tsukuba Circuit since we anticipated a pretty busy morning. This was Attack’s 10th anniversary event and as such, was planned to be their biggest event to date. With the borders finally re-opened to the world, foreigners like us would most definitely want to attend this incredible event. We stopped to grab breakfast and by the time we arrived at Tsukuba, there was already a really long line to get inside. Thankfully, we were able to get some pit passes the day before and were able to drive right in…

Started the morning getting an overhead shot of Kunihiko Bando’s AutoBahn R33 Skyline GTR. Crazy to think that this is one of the fastest at Tsukuba Circuit, with a remarkable 54.184 second lap time, and there isn’t much in terms of aero developments. It just features a massive front splitter, a pair of carbon fiber doors, carbon trunk, and chassis-mounted rear wing all made by Under Suzuki…

Bando is known more for his Toyota Soarer which has become a regular at Attack Tsukuba over the years but the car is going through an entire rebuild…

0L0A5410-Edit

The RB26 has been completely overhauled with a Nitto Stroker Kit, bumping it up to 2.8-liter, and features a Garrett G40-1150 71mm turbocharger. Hypertune intake and exhaust manifolds can be found on Bando’s RB as well as a Ross Performance dry-sump kit…

0L0A5414-Edit

Giving life to this 2.8L RB is a MoTec M800 ECU and getting the power to the 295-wide Yokohama Advan A050 tires is a baller Holinger 6-speed sequential gearbox…

0L0A5491-Edit

Also while I was up in the elevated viewing area of Tsukuba Circuit, I captured a photo of the massive TEMPLE Racing logo on the carbon fiber roof of the PETRONAS ASLAN EF9 Civic…

0L0A5497-Edit

Taichi Inose and the Friends Racing S14 Silvia. You might remember all the photos of the S15 Silvia from Friends Racing that I captured the last time I was at an Attack Tsukuba event in 2020. No S15 this year as all the attention was devoted to this once 9-second drag car turned time attack machine. (Thanks to Sean Lucas for the info)…

0L0A5503-Edit

You wouldn’t expect this Silvia to be competitive at a glance, just because you don’t often see the S14 platform utilized much in time attack, but the Friends Racing S14 ran an incredibly impressive 58.115 lap time. Up front there’s a big custom front splitter paired with a Car Modify Wonder front, the front fenders are widened versions from Car Modify Wonder’s Glare GT line of aero, as are the rear quarters, but there is a noticeable set of side skirts missing. Not sure why this was done, perhaps they see it as an unnecessary piece, much like the Autobahn R33, but whatever the case, it seems to work for them…

0L0A5535-Edit

The rear section of this S14 has been heavily-altered, with the trunk floor comepletely omitted, and the exhaust now exits out the center, significantly higher than stock. Whatever is left of the rear of this car is used to be a mounting surface for the chassis-mounted rear spoiler. Under the hood, from what I remember, was a SR-powerplant with a low-mounted turbocharger…

0L0A5509-Edit

Takuma Okayasu’s “silent7” FD3S RX7 was another competitor that was able to break the 1-minute barrier, finishing with a best lap time of 59.062. The silent7 looks to be a car supported by the highly-touted Mazda tuning shop Panspeed wearing it’s complete GT2010 aero kit, GT2007 fenders, and rear over-fender kit. The front splitter looks to be custom-made and the hood is the incredibly-lengthy-named ‘READY GO NEXT ATTACK X CARBON JUNKIES X SIGHT HOUND’ dry carbon hood made by Work Shop TAKUMI…

Could I have just said it was a Carbon Junkies hood? Sure. Do I want to be overly-detailed so you guys get all the right information? Of course…

0L0A5526-Edit

The Mita Project FD2 Civic Type R owned by Yosuke Suzuki. I actually see this car fairly often on Twitter and was pleasantly surprised to see that it is just as low as it appeared in photos. It’s a 208-horsepower Type R that weighs 1035kg (around 2282lbs), runs a FEEL’S front lip, a custom front splitter, MAX Racing sideskirts, INGS+1 vented hood, and WEDS TC105N wheels (18-inch front/17-inch rear

I wish I had captured a few more photos of Kyon’s Impact Magic! MR-S. This Honda K20-powered ZZW30 utilizes TODA Racing individual throttle bodies, ITG air cleaner, TODA A3 cams, Trial titanium exhaust, Integra Type R Cross Mission, Trial Reckless GT widebody kit, GarageBB Forte GT wing, and so much more. Kyon finished with a 1’00.037 best lap time in the Naturally Aspirated category…

0L0A5682-Edit

It’s rare to ever get a look under the rear engine cover on the 993 but it features a Promodet-built 3.8L Porsche engine with a Turbonetics turbo and Hewland sequential gearbox. Matsumoto might possess one of the fastest RWB Porsches in Japan finishing with a 57.891 best lap time at TC2000…

0L0A5686-Edit

Moto Hirakawa from Decide226 and their 180-horsepower Suzuki Cara/Autozam AZ-1. This gullwinged Kei car actually still runs the factory 657cc F6A engine but is now turbocharged and makes around 176-horsepower! It was the second fastest in Attack’s Kei car category with a best lap of 1’01.340…

0L0A5706-Edit

Chonan Shinji’s Garage Rise Up x GNR EK9 Civic Type R made a bit more power this year but produced a similar result as 2022 with a 58.481 lap time…

0L0A5701-Edit

The K20A inside Shinji’s EK9 look to be running a set of OBX individual throttle bodies…

0L0A5724-Edit

Tajimaru’s Z33 was probably the only one of its platform competing this year at Attack, running in the NA Class making about 340-horsepower with a N-ONE Racing SUNDOME dry carbon front bumper, vented hood, and front fenders. Like most of the faster competitors in the NA Class, Tajimaru finished just under the 1-minute mark with a best lap of 59.252…

A glimpse at the rear end of Seyamax’s VOLTEX★ADMIX 32GTR. The rear spare tire trunk area has been completely cut-out with a massive carbon rear diffuser mounted to the frame rails. Up top is a Voltex Type 15 wing attached to the chassis with aluminum stands…

Absolutely love the fact that they are still utilizing a SARD Stack Meter inside the FD…

0L0A5775-Edit

The HKS Racing Performer GR86 Turbo driven by Nobuteru Taniguchi. Love that they used their iconic HKS Super Oil livery over their new GR86 widebody aero kit. There is actually a category specifically for tuning shops and manufacturers that the HKS GR86 competed in. Taniguchi has become pretty familiar with this turbocharged ZN8 and the HKS team completed the event with a best lap of 56.761. A blisteringly-fast time for a brand new platform with stock internals…

0L0A5786-Edit

I’ll be the first one, other than maybe Ryan Der, to admit that I am completely infatuated with the Voltex Circuit Version III aero kit for the S2000 chassis. If I ever had an S2000 and about $37K sitting around, I’m sure I’d get the kit as well but I have neither of those things. As a consolation, I can only stop and obsess over S2000s that do have the aero package and there aren’t very many in the world…

0L0A5796-Edit

Yusaku Shibata and the ARVOU S2000 are one of maybe 15 in the world to have this kit. Other than the Top Fuel S2000 RR and the Evasive S2K, the ARVOU AP2 might be one of the most recognizable. It looks similar to the Top Fuel car, probably because it is also white, but they couldn’t be more different…

0L0A5806-Edit

Unlike the Garrett turbocharged Top Fuel S2000 RR, ARVOU’s S2000 features an HKS GT Supercharger kit…

0L0A5693-Edit

With one of the Advan GT wheels off the car, I was able to get a glimpse of the ARVOU SPL E12 coilovers made by Ennepetal/Bilstein…

0L0A5831-Edit

I remember seeing the original ARVOU S2000 “Maou” demo car when I visited their shop years ago. This one is actually a different shell utilizing the entire engine set-up from the “Maou” car. That one was famously wrecked by Max Orido during a filming for Hot Version when it ended-up under a guard rail. The shell was tossed and everything was transferred over to this Voltex-equipped project…

0L0A5832-Edit

Shibata and the ARVOU S2000 finished as the fastest S2000 at Attack and was actually the third fastest overall of the entire field of competitors with a best lap of 53.710…

For context, and if you really do want to compare, the Top Fuel S2000 RR which makes almost double the horsepower, is still the fastest S2000 to ever compete at TC2000 with a best Taniguchi-piloted lap time of 51.762…

0L0A5881-Edit

Speaking of S2000s, the ASM S2000 Jiro was one I didn’t expect to see. Probably because I’ve never seen it before. This is a newer project by ASM Yokohama, put together for Redbull-sponsored Super GT driver, and 24 year-old, Toshiki Oyu. The exterior is very simple, with just an ASM hood, dry carbon fiber doors, GT wing, and Craftsquare mirrors. The entire stock body has also been resprayed in an iridescent purple/blue hue…

0L0A5863-Edit

Inside the S2000 is a TODA Racing 2.35L complete engine, marked as serial no. 1. Crazy to see this after we visited TODA Racing just a week before….

0L0A5869-Edit

There’s also this beautiful ASM front strut tower brace to help bring your eyes to the TODA Racing badge on the OEM valve cover. Also attached is a brand new Mugen intake and airbox set-up…

0L0A5847-Edit

Hirofumi Motada’s Technical Factory BE CRAFT RX-7 looked stunning with its green-striped livery, TCP Magic aero, Advan TCIII wheels, and massive GT wing. Not only did it look great, this FD3S is fast, clocking in a 57.519 best lap time…

0L0A5886-Edit

One of my favorites this year was the SSK JZA80 Supra running a full Ridox aero kit, TRD hood, Esprit front flares, and what looks to be an Esprit rear wing…

0L0A5891-Edit

You just don’t see too many A80 Supras anymore compared to the 32, 33, and 34GTR platforms. Hell, even compared to the Mazda FD RX-7s. Perhaps they just aren’t as competitive or maybe more enthusiasts just prefer the Skyline and RX-7 over the Supra…

0L0A5910-Edit

No matter the case, any time I do encounter an A80 in Japan, it usually looks pretty good and this one has everything you’d want aesthetically. Under the TRD vented hood is also a 2JZ-GTE that makes around 700-horsepower…

Akira Dodo and the ☆WORKS Michido☆ AE85 Corolla Levin looked and sounded great early in the morning of Attack Tsukuba but it appeared that they ran into some engine issues after a couple sessions. Eventually I found it sitting outside in the parking lot completely intact but no longer competing…

Wataru Masuda and the Reverse Wataru BNR34 Skyline GTR competing in the Real Tuning Class with a best lap time of 1’00.584. No extensive aero package on this 34GTR, just Nismo Z-Tune components with a mild front splitter added. Under the hood is an HKS 2.8L RB engine paired with an HKS GT2530 turbocharger…

0L0A5974-Edit

Suzuki came over for a quick photo. It was nice to finally meet him…

0L0A5996-Edit

We eventually walked around the parking lot to try and find some cool builds and stumbled upon this MA70 Supra from Mid Night Racing Team. We had actually seen a couple cars from Mid Night early that morning which led Der to wanting to seek them out in the lot. Since there were a couple cars from the famous car club competing, we thought that there would be others who were there for support…

0L0A6000-Edit

We actually filmed some of this search in the parking lot and I was joking around that we’d punch Der in the stomach if we didn’t find any Mid Night cars since it was such a far walk. It was actually a pretty funny segment but it would have made the Vlog way too long. I also don’t know if YouTube would be happy about us threatening violence on our friend in video, lol…

0L0A6004-Edit

Der happily standing up right after not being punch in the stomach…

0L0A6015-Edit

Under Suzuki made his grand return to Tsukuba Circuit in his nearly-finished rebuild of the SCORCH Racing S15. If you guys aren’t familiar, he was at one time the fastest at TC2000 but wrecked his S15 during the World Time Attack Challenge in Sydney, Australia back in 2019…

0L0A6109-Edit

The car has been in the rebuild stages since then and he was able to get most of it together to display the car at Attack’s 10th anniversary event. It looks like Suzuki is getting really close to completing the car and should be back to compete in 2024…

0L0A6021-Edit

My expectations are simple; see RWB Phoenix and take a photo of RWB Phoenix…

0L0A6036-Edit

Fire Ando once again reset the Tsukuba Circuit record by breaking the 50-second barrier a few weeks before with a lap time of 49.897. Rumor has it that the ESCORT Evo 9 might be heading towards retirement after the record…

0L0A6043-Edit

After the ESCORT team finished putting the car back together the day before, Ando hopped-in and casually ran a 50.112 lap at TC2000 to remind everyone why he’s the reigning king of Tsukuba Circuit. The next fastest competitor was over 2-seconds slower. Put that into perspective for a moment…

0L0A6050-Edit

0L0A6062-Edit

There are already a couple of builds in the works that will try to best Ando and the ESCORT Evo, but I wonder how much longer this record will remain in the coming years…

0L0A6063-Edit

Kristian is the only one I know that reviews photos he’s taken this way. I was left not only wondering if anyone would ever beat Ando’s record but also if Fuji has a better way to review photos and if Kristian just doesn’t realize it…

0L0A6085-Edit

Toshihiko Nogami’s NOPRO☆DXLΩATS☆NC Roadster is one of the more developed NC Roadsters in all of Japan. If I remember correctly, I think this car might be twin-charged, meaning that it has both a turbocharger and a Rotrex supercharger…

0L0A6092-Edit

I don’t know if anyone else noticed but I thought it was interesting that the HKS Racing Performer GR86 displayed the Advan GT wheels with center caps on the driver’s side and no caps on the opposite. Small little details like that are why I appreciate a company like HKS…
