First night drive…

First night drive down the street was a success. Been busy the last few weeks so the EK9 hasn’t been getting much attention but now that we’re back from Indonesia, Yasu was able to spend some time on the car…

One of the major issues we had with the Civic was when we first acquired it, it was a bare shell which had a fuel tank in it that wasn’t in the greatest condition. That had to be swapped for another cleaner one since it was kind of rusty inside. After we brought the car back from Wekfest Japan, we also noticed the rear main seal was leaking so that also had to be addressed. The car is still running a bit too rich but that’s mainly because the injectors are a bit too big for the B16B when it’s paired with this particular Mugen N1 ECU we are running. After a drive down the street to the local gas station to fill up the new tank, we discovered that VTEC crossover comes at 4,000 RPM which was quite a surprise. The car gets kinda rowdy pretty early in the powerband but eventually we may switch to a different unit, possibly something more modern like a Link ECU. The idea of keeping the Mugen ECU is cool cuz it’s very traditional and goes with the theme of the car but it’s just dumping fuel with the RDX injectors in there…

Other than that there’s still some buttoning-up to do like adding an e-brake and some other random things. Yasu also added a set of pedals from a CL7 which pairs up nicely on the car even though I also acquired a set of Mugen pedals when I was in Jakarta recently…

I also added a quick clip of the EK9 so you guys can hear what the Vision-R N1 exhaust sounds like inside the car. It’s paired with a TODA Racing header and OEM B-pipe for those wondering. I elected to not run a straight-pipe out the center like they do traditionally here in Osaka just because it gets a bit too raspy and I don’t like the idea of having to alter the rear lip to move the pipe up to prevent dragging. Anyways the car also still needs an alignment but we’ll probably knock it out this week. I gotta go back home soon so it’s nice just to get the car all situated before we put it away for the summer…

  1. Beautiful posting and car! Your car sounds soo crispy clean with the B-pipe.

Joey thanks for this blog post and a video clip. This is what The Chronicles is for alot of us still. Just some nice and simple blog posts to capture the times.

Now this is timeless. I don’t recall ever re-watching vlogs again, but these pix and blog posts I do so often..just sayin’.

Cheers and Yasu keeps on being the man! =)

    • What kind of hood is on the civic? I have the same hood, I got when I worked at JDM engine company. No label no nothing. Been trying to figure it out since 2015 when I got the hood.

      • Hi Zdiz, Good question that gets asked alot. The double vented hood is originally known as a J’s Racing Type-T hood, and the one you see on Joey’s car is a carbon fiber version made by a company that used to produce these same hoods for J’s Racing. In the video, Joey explains they purchased before that company closed down. Ryan Der has the same hood on his project EK. You can see more of Ryan’s car @ IG: ryan.der

  2. Thank you so much for sharing you’re adventures with everyone Joey! Much love from Northern Canada. Now to get my brother back into Hondas by showing him this new EK9 you got here. Keep up the amazing work.
