Wekfest San Jose 2013 Coverage…Part 5…

IMG_7317-Edit

Well, it’s about that time… After today’s portion of coverage, there is just one more before we officially wrap-up the 2013 Wekfest San Jose coverage. Everything else that was important to discuss in regards to the Wekfest show has already been discussed in the previous four posts so today we’re gonna be looking at the end of the show. Unlike the previous posts that documented the show in the morning, Part 5 focuses mainly on the late afternoon. I spent the entire morning doing coverage and then the rest of the show was busy for me as I was placed with the role of judging the Acura Class. With this level of competition, it was definitely harder than I expected. A couple of new builds sprung up at this event for the first time and it just really made things that much more competitive at the “Superbowl” of car shows. The photos you see below are all from the late, late afternoon. You’ll see some of the cars that I missed previously and some of my favorites of the show that I went back to get more photos of. Also including in this post are some of the award winners that you may have come to be familiar with over time if you follow The Chronicles. There was no point in me documenting every single winner as it would just make things extremely tedious for me, so I just spent my time getting photos of the people that I know whose cars have appeared previously on the site. The posts that document the latter part of events I go to are usually some of my favorites, because they capture more of the personal side of these shows. I’m all about trying to cover the lifestyle side of our community so I really enjoy the random, candid shots of our fellow enthusiasts. Hopefully you guys care as much as I do. If not, then there is still some car content for you guys to look at. Enjoy and have a good read…

There are four other posts prior to this that document everything from the beginning of the show until this point. Please catch-up if you haven’t already before moving onto Part 5…

As the show was nearing its end, I made my way over to the ICB booth one more time to chat with Matt for a little bit and also to get a closer look at the new ICB-exclusive First Molding kevlar stuff. Matt pretty much has First Molding on lock here in America and they are producing these carbon kevlar pieces just for ICB Motorsport…

IMG_7322-Edit

ICB also debuted their new line of bucket seats…

IMG_7357-Edit

ICB Matt and Anh from ATS Garage chillin’ on some of the new ICB seats. Cool to see Matt rocking an ATS Garage shirt…

IMG_7363-Edit

IMG_7364-Edit

Teddy Timoteo’s Civic was one of the cars that were used in the ICB booth to display the new First Molding kevlar components. One of the new ideas that Matt and First Molding came up with was to badge all the First Molding lips now. That way you know that they are quality First Molding products and not some generic knock-offs…

IMG_7330-Edit

With the crowd finally dying down towards the end of the show, I also got a really good look at Jay Calderon’s Mugen aero-equipped, K-swapped DC2 Integra…

IMG_7328-Edit

Love how the car came together and all the great parts that were used. It still isn’t quite finished yet but RC’s Garage did an excellent job on it…

IMG_7329-Edit

One of my favorite parts on this DC2 are actually the side mirrors. Ganador Super Mirrors are some of the most sought-after rare Japanese parts so it is always good to see them pop-up again on a new build….

IMG_7332-Edit

IMG_7331-Edit

The highlight of this car is definitely the K-swap with all the 24K gold-plated parts. We haven’t really seen this much gold-plating done on a K since Rudy Falcon’s DC5 and it is a good reminder of how plating is not only done correctly, but also a reminder of how far ahead of the times Rudy was when he had his car. Gold was a perfect choice for Calderon’s Integra because it just contrasts against the bright red so well…

Wekfest San Jose marked the debut of The Chronicles license plate frames. If you guys are interested in grabbing some for yourself, you can purchase them at The Chronicles official storefront, http://www.NORIVALNOEQUAL.com ….

IMG_7335-Edit

Jeremy Duarte’s turbocharged DB8 Integra with the plaque of his Honda Tuning feature that was shot and written by your’s truly…

IMG_7337-Edit

While I like the wheels, I think that 20-inch Advan Racing GT wheels are a tad much for this RX-7. These wheels were originally designed specifically for the R35 chassis and as such, I think they would be better served on that platform…

IMG_7339-Edit

Stopped by to chat with the ATS Garage guys one more time and got some more photos of Ferd’s RHD DC2…

IMG_7342-Edit

Falken Azenis rubber chalked with “ATSGUSA” to represent ATS Garage USA…

IMG_7312-Edit

Another shot of the engine bay with the hood off…

IMG_7343-Edit

Didn’t get a chance to get a rear quarter shot before so I snapped a few since there weren’t that many people walking into my shots anymore. Love the sizing of the TE37s and how the car sits…

IMG_7319-Edit

I wonder how many people noticed the molded gurney flap on Ferd’s ITR wing. Really nice, subtle touch…

IMG_7321-Edit

Happy to see that I’m well-represented on the center of the windshield on ATS Kranky…

IMG_7346-Edit

Looked over to the next row across from the ATS Garage builds and noticed that I forgot to take a picture of this Liberty Walk widebody M3 from Heavy Hitters…

IMG_7304-Edit

I made an effort to try to wait until the end to capture certain cars because I knew for sure that I would remember to get them. Naturally, I forgot of course. With all the craziness of judging cars, running into random people, and making sure the booth was okay, I forgot some cars. For example, I didn’t forget Ryan’s E-AT because it was at the booth so I would for sure remember, but then I turned around and totally forgot to get a shot of Chuy’s ITR from DPK, which was also parked in my booth. I felt like such an idiot for forgetting and didn’t even notice until after the show. I also totally forgot to get a shot of Michael Mao’s NSX at its first Wekfest Norcal event ever and one of the cars that I had been waiting for a while to see in person, Ray Deleon’s 4-door Integra. Before they start wondering, it wasn’t that I ignored your cars, I just forgot, haha!…Next time I’ll remember…I hope…

One more of Elvis Skender’s LS400 on Work Meister S1s and Airrunner suspension…

IMG_7359-Edit

Really liked this S14 from Speed Element with Vertex Ridge Zenki widebody aero and Work Meister S1Rs…

IMG_7370-Edit

Here is an exclusive shot of the “war room” up in the private skybox of the San Jose Convention Center where we tallied up all the winners of the show that day. It looks light-hearted but things got pretty hectic towards the end…

IMG_7372-Edit

Big Mike looked pretty beat from wearing all those bright ass colors that day…

IMG_7375-Edit

Back on the show floor, it was officially time to get the awards ceremony started. What you’re looking at above is a special award for “Best Engineering” presented by FFTEC Motorsports…

IMG_7377-Edit

A really big surprise was this giant trophy that would be presented to the “Car of the Festival”. This is an award that is chosen specifically by Junior, Ken, and William of Wekfest. Not to be confused with the overall “Best of Show” honors, which is decided amongst all the judges. I gotta admit, this thing reminded me of a giant urn and I couldn’t stop thinking of The Undertaker and Paul Bearer from my days when I used to watch prowrestling…

IMG_7378-Edit

Our friend Hiro Ueda from Japan getting some shots of the urn…

IMG_7384-Edit

Junior and Elissa Alva bring a start to the awards ceremony…

IMG_7394-Edit

My view of things…

IMG_7405-Edit

IMG_7414-Edit

Harvey Flores and his 4-door Mugen DB8 Integra placed in the “Best Integra” category…

IMG_7417-Edit

Anh and Fred are no strangers to winning awards at the Norcal Wekfest events…

IMG_7420-Edit

Jay Calderon picked up his first ever award at Wekfest with his Mugen DC2 build…

IMG_7431-Edit

Dina Sakai and Mike Jones from ATS Garage got together for a photo after she picked up her award in the Best S2000 category…I believe she placed second…

IMG_7438-Edit

First Place in the S2000 Class went to Hanzel Tango and his black Mugen SS S2000…

IMG_7440-Edit

ATS Jones won 3rd Place in the Best Civic category…

IMG_7445-Edit

Chris Gonzalez’s H2B EF Civic placed 2nd in the Best Civic class…

IMG_7446-Edit

The Rywire E-AT Civic earned 1st Place honors in the Civic Class..

IMG_7455-Edit

Mike Trevino’s K-swapped Civic sedan from Bandits car club won 3rd in the overall “Best Honda” class…

IMG_7462-Edit

Danny Hernandez impressed Elissa Alva with his lack of shoes when he went up to grab his 2nd Place Honda Class win…

IMG_7465-Edit

1st Place Best Honda went to Chris Sakai and his EK from ATS Garage…

IMG_7469-Edit

Michael Mao and his twin-turbo NSX won “Best Import of the Festival”…

IMG_7472-Edit

ATS Garage ended the day by taking home 3rd Place in the “Best Car Crew” category. ATS Ray tried to steal all the spotlight and get first dibs at a photo with Elissa Alva…

IMG_7481-Edit

…but then the whole crew jumped in for some fun… Not pictured was ATS FerdOne picking up his overall 3rd Place “Best of Show” award. I don’t recall what happened there or why I forgot to capture it…

IMG_7497-Edit

Thomas Pinai and family picking up his “Best of Show” award. As I said in yesterday’s post, the “King of the South” is now also the “King of the West”… Congrats to him…

IMG_7504-Edit

…and for those who were wondering who won this giant trophy, it went to the Toyota 2JZ-GE swapped Mazda RX-4 from Ranz Motorsports…

After the awards, it was time to clean up and get ready for dinner…

IMG_7511-Edit

I stopped to get a group shot of the big winners that day, ATS Garage. A few familiar faces were missing but this is most of the group posing along with ATS Kranky…

IMG_7518-Edit

ATS Jones and DPK David by the booth after we cleaned-up and waited for the cars to exit the building…

We all got together for dinner afterwards at a Red Robin that wasn’t too far away from the show. Some of the others had to go home to drop off their cars and what not but those that remained met up at the Sakai’ residence before heading out to dinner…

IMG_7523-Edit

After a long day of running around, taking almost 1,000 photos, and inhaling all kinds of exhaust fumes, there’s no better feeling than just being able to have a seat to enjoy a nice cold glass of water…

IMG_7526-Edit

Some preferred a cold beer, which was also appropriate for the occasion…

IMG_7521-Edit

Our group was pretty large so we had to get separate tables at first just so we could get some food in our stomachs. Once the party next to us left, we were all able to sit together to break bread…

IMG_7532-Edit

May ordered this Turkey and Bacon croissant sandwich…

IMG_7537-Edit

While I ordered this French Beef Dip with Au Jus… My sandwich was looking real “Francine Dee-like” if you know what I’m sayin’, haha… If not, GOOGLE IT…

IMG_7540-Edit

It’s always good to spend some time with the guys up in Norcal because it never seems like we really have the time to chill anymore. Life just works out that way. Priorities and other stuff take precious time away from friends and family but it’s moments like this that help to make up for lost time…

IMG_7543-Edit

Well, that’s a wrap on Part five. I ended up staying an extra day and had some more adventures before heading back to Socal, which is covered tomorrow in Part 6 of 6. Stay tuned and thanks for looking as always…
