Wekfest San Jose 2013 Coverage…Part 4…

IMG_7299-Edit

Diving right back in now with Part 4 of our ongoing Wekfest San Jose 2013 coverage… Today we will be looking at some more builds from the show and tomorrow we will jump forward in time into the middle of the day and the latter half of the show with awards and what not. It may seem hard to believe being that we are now in Part 4 already but the majority of the coverage you’re going to see today was done before the show even started. This year’s was probably the easy for me to do in terms of coverage because I had a ton of free time in the morning. While some still favored same day roll-in, I myself really like that they did most of the set-up the day prior because it gave me space and time to get whatever I needed for the site. Some have argued that it adds to the overall “Wekfest Norcal feel” by having the set-up in the morning but I think everything just flows better with a two-day set-up instead of all the congestion in the morning. Some of the best photos in past Wekfest coverages you’ve seen on this site were from the actual roll-in but I think I can always capture that stuff if I attend the previous day’s roll-in. This year I was unable to because I wanted to make sure I had time to see the city but now that I know how everything comes together show-wise, I will be able to capture everything next year. In any case, enjoy Part 4 below. Part 5 will cover the end of the event and the sixth and final part is really good if you’re into everything that goes on outside of the show. I documented what I did the day after as well as the drive back to Socal. It’s good stuff, trust me…

If you missed the three prior posts, make sure to catch-up below…

…and here is the fourth installment…

Kicking it off with a couple shots of ekserio aka Danny Hernandez’s K-swapped 4-door Civic. These Regamaster EVOs in this particular sizing are probably the best set of wheels on this car since he’s done the major overhaul, in my opinion anyway. This car has a long history in the Cali Honda community and it’s almost a little sad to see that it is now being parted-out. Danny’s had this car forever so you can’t really blame him for wanting to move on but it is always tough to see good builds parted and sold…

Another Civic build that is soon to be parted and sold is a teammate of Danny’s, Mike Trevino. You guys should all be very familiar with Mike’s Civic by now. It’s a regular on this site and not only was it in Honda Tuning magazine twice, it was also one of my Top Ten Hondas of 2012. Mike too has decided to move on and from my short chat with him at Wekfest, he said that the shell was already sold and the rest just had to be parted. Another well executed Honda build that soon will be no more…

One of the big reasons why they’ve moved on from their Hondas is that both Mike and Danny have decided to build something completely different with these two Cadillacs. The blue one above is Danny’s and the white/green ’64 is Mike’s. Pretty cool to see these two lined up with their Civics at Wekfest….

One of the best Honda/Acura builds at Wekfest SJ was Danny Avina’s Mugen DC5 RSX. I hadn’t really seen this car in awhile and was surprised to see the new turbo set-up by ALL-IN Fab. I really like the attention to detail with the white and gold accents mixed in with the high-polished pieces. He did a great job coating those Vibrant Performance Vanjen clamps and layering them with the gold foil material to match. Overall it is just a very well-executed build. It has complete, legit, Mugen aero, Volk Racing wheels, brakes, the interior has been addressed and it also has custom audio. Can’t really ask for much more out of this build because Danny has already thought of basically everything. I think a lot of people sleep on this car because it is an RSX and isn’t as popular as a DC2 or Civic but it was one of the best at Wekfest San Jose…

At one point during the show, I was invited along with Rodrez from Honda Tuning to go up to Wekfest’s private skybox where I was able to see how the show looked from above. It was still early so the show wasn’t even packed yet and you can already see how it looked…

Futura Designs brought out Giovanni Dichiara’s recently-supercharged Lexus LS430 from Texas to compete with the best at Wekfest San Jose. This is one of my favorite builds in North America and after seeing it in Texas last year, it was good to be reunited with it in San Jose….

OZ Racing Futuras with caps matched to the blue-tone of the Futura brakes…I probably should have taken a photo of the other front wheel since it was all lined-up with the caliper exposed and all, haha… oh well…

One more for good measure. Awesome how they were able to get that light blue to work on the black and silver, and then transitioning it into the tan interior. Fluidity is such an important factor in a well-rounded build and this LS430 is a great example of how to do it “right”…

Speaking of great builds making their way out from Texas, Thomas Pinai also had his car transported to Norcal to compete at Wekfest San Jose. If you remember, Thomas’ GS was dubbed “The King of the South” after winning top honors at the Wekfest TX show two years in a row. He decided to bring his car back to the region where he originally grew up and ended the day by winning top honors at Wekfest San Jose. I guess the “King of the South” is now also the “King of the West”. Many of you may not be into the VIP scene, but Thomas’ GS reaches beyond just that of the VIP crowd and is just a incredibly well-built vehicle in all aspects. He has it all covered from custom engine bay, suspenion and wheels, brakes, rare Japanese aero, custom interior, and even a full custom audio set-up in the trunk. It literally has it all. There are also some modifications that only the most diehard would appreciate that the casual eye would not catch, like his custom radiused fenders. The craziest part about this build is that it was never meant to be a show car. Thomas just built this car because he wanted to build a VIP car to cruise around in and this is what he came up with! Wekfest San Jose is probably only the third show he has done with this car, with the other two being the two Wekfest events in Texas. When you build a car for fun and end up winning Best of Show in the only three events you take it to, you are doing something right. Best part about Thomas is that he’s also a Honda guy and is working on a Civic project as we speak…

Another car that traveled long distances to be at Wekfest was Samson Mak’s LS430 build on SSR Professor MS3s. The car was transported from Hawaii and currently resides in California while Samson still resides on the island. He said he loves having the car out here and plans to keep it in Cali to display at events. Whenever he makes the trip out here, he can drive his car everywhere and not ever have to worry about renting a car. Must be nice, huh?…

Over at the booth, baby Maddox was watching Yo Gabba Gabba! on an iPhone and eating stuff off of his shirt. Crazy to see how good he is at maneuvering through an iPhone at only 18 months. The only thing I know what to do with an iPhone is throw it away, haha…

IMG_7282-Edit

Had to get a photo of Rywire Ryan with his new friend Jo, who like him, is also an NSX owner. She made the trip all the way out from Hawaii to attend Wekfest San Jose and hopefully the show wasn’t too overwhelming for her. I know a lot of people who have made the trip and are thoroughly shocked by how massive the event is. It was nice to meet her after following her car and food exploits on Instagram (Bug her @j0_y)…

Closing out Part 4 with a shot of Ryan Der and Nick Caster as the crowd started to fill the San Jose Convention Center. Thanks for looking and stay tuned for Parts 5 and 6!!…
